IT Automation: Speeding Up the Individual Task
The main goal of automation is to take the place of human hands in a single, repetitive task. It works in a single lane and has a limited focus.
Some well-known instances are:
•   Applying a software update to a computer.
•   Creating a script to restart a Windows service that is frozen.
•   Executing a local server backup every night.
•   Using a template to create a new user profile.

The main goal here is efficiency. A straightforward issue is resolved with automation: "How do we stop clicking the same button over and over?" But a simple automation script doesn't give a damn about what's going on in other systems. It won't wait for clearance or see if another department is prepared.
